My Research Process.
Climate change and global warming have for the longest time been of great importance to me. When given the research essay assignment, I knew that writing about something I was truly concerned over would result in a more impactful paper. I searched the New York Times website for current events pertaining to climate change, and I was able to find a very interesting article on a marine lake in Indonesia. Indonesia actually happens to be a site to visit on my bucket list, and discovering that it's beauty could be put into jeopardy because of climate change drove me to write about it. Soon I found out that due to climate change and evolution, the lake's jellyfish population mutated to be unable to sting. My research question ended up being "How does Kakaban Lake in Indonesia reflect future impacts of climate change on ecosystems?" I originally hypothesized that the environmental properties of Kakaban Lake serve as a projection of how climate change is impacting the Earth's ecosystems. However, research and revision gave my final thesis more detail and precision. My finalized thesis ended up being that "the environmental and chemical trends of not only Kakaban Lake, but also many other underwater habitats around the world, project how climate change will eventually alter the composition and diminish the biodiversity of marine ecosystems."
When researching, I found myself in the moment, and I made the mistake of losing focus. Even though I made valuable connections between Indonesia and other parts of the world, this deviated from the purpose of the essay, which was to focus on a current event in a particular country or region. That being said, I was able to collect scientific data from reliable resources that provided my essay with great credibility. I used the websites of universities, government and environmental agencies, and individual experienced researchers to support my thesis, making my essay highly reputable. If I were to start this assignment over from scratch, I think that I would try to find a topic that has a greater opportunity for specific elaboration, allowing me to avoid deviating from a particular region. Even though my essay pulls from places around the world, I think that passion and synthesis allow my essay to be both informative and impactful.
